Derby Day and the Spring Racing Carnival: getting there in style

Derby Day, on Saturday 31 October 2026, opens the biggest week in Melbourne racing. Here is how to plan your transport so the day is about the racing, the company and the occasion, not about parking or finding a ride home.

What Derby Day is

Derby Day is the first of the big Flemington carnival days and sits at the start of the Spring Racing Carnival. It is followed by Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November and Oaks Day on Thursday 5 November. Many people attend more than one, and many more treat the day as a reason to dress up and catch up with friends or clients.

Why people book a chauffeur for race day

  • You arrive on time and looking your best, without driving or parking.
  • Everyone in your group can enjoy the day, with no designated driver.
  • A professional driver takes care of the pick-up and the return, so you are not hunting for a ride at the end of a long day.
  • A group travels together instead of in several cars.

Plan the day before the day

Race days are busy, and chauffeur bookings for them fill early. Decide your pick-up time, the number of guests and any extra stops (a lunch beforehand, a hotel, a home address for the last guest) and then book. Our instant quote works out the fare for a transfer, and if you want a car for the whole day, hourly hire keeps the same driver with you from 3 hours up to 12.

Give your driver a realistic return time rather than an exact one. Race days run late and the crowd leaves in waves, so build in some breathing room.

Choosing the right vehicle

A Luxury Sedan suits up to 3 passengers and a Luxury SUV up to 5. For a bigger group, the Executive Van takes up to 7 and the Mercedes Sprinter up to 12, which keeps a corporate table or a group of friends together. Our guide to choosing the right vehicle explains the differences.

Corporate hosts and clients

If you are hosting clients, a chauffeur is part of the hospitality. Your guests are collected, looked after and returned, and you can focus on the day. See our General Transfer service or ask about a booking for several cars.

Check the official details

Entry, dress codes, gates and road arrangements around the racecourse can change from year to year, so please check the Victoria Racing Club and Public Transport Victoria websites for the current details before you travel. Tell us your venue and we will plan the pick-up around it.
